County to seek death penalty in Mahmod murder
SHENANDOAH – Schuylkill County will seek the death penalty for Nathaniel Kimmel in the alleged murder of South Catherine Street resident April Mahmod a few months ago.
District Attorney Michael O’Pake filed notice of intent to pursue the penalty today.
Kimmel, of Girardville, is accused of killing Mahmod, his ex-girlfriend, when she returned to her 104 South Catherine Street home from work.
Kimmel is accused of ambushing Mahmod and stabbing her 61 times as she fled to 106 South Catherine, where her uncle found her.
O’Pake noted that the amount of times Kimmel stabbed Mahmod was a factor in pursuing the death penalty.
O’Pake will be the lead prosecutor when the case goes to trial next year.
