County announces fall cleanup, recycling event

POTTSVILLE – Need to get rid of that old stove, fridge, or sofa? Your opportunity is coming up.

Schuylkill County is sponsoring a scrap tire, appliance, and bulky-item drop-off for all county residents starting Sept. 4 at various sites throughout the county.

No electronics will be accepted this year, nor will any household hazardous waste, i.e. paints, solvents, and cleaners.

Accepted will be:

  • Automobile, light truck, and motorcycle/RV tires, limit 20 per load and no more than two loads per customer, at a cost of $2 per tire;
  • Freon-bearing appliances (air conditioners, refrigerators, and dehumidifiers) at a cost of $10 each;
  • Non-freon bearing appliances and scrap metal (stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters, bicycles, grills, and metal furniture) at no charge;
  • Bulky items:
    • Mattresses, box springs, rolls of carpet, doors, windows at $10 each
    • Sofas, overstuffed chairs at a cost of $5 per cushion.

Proof of county residency must be provided.

Local drop-off locations and dates are as follows:

  • Ringtown Borough, West Apple Street near the recycling site, Thursday Sept. 7 and Friday Sept. 8 from 9am to 4pm and Saturday Sept. 9 from 9am to 1pm;
  • Girardville Borough, behind the A Street School, Thursday Sept. 14 and Friday Sept. 15 from 9am to 5pm and Saturday Sept. 16 from 9am to 1pm;
  • East Union Township, at the township building in Sheppton, Thursday Sept. 14 and Friday Sept. 15 from 8am to 2pm and Saturday Sept. 16 from 8am to noon;
  • Mahanoy City Borough, next to the Elks lodge at 135 East Centre Street, Thursday Sept. 14 and Friday Sept. 15 from 8am to 3pm.
