Closure of Big Lots DC may be averted with company sale
TREMONT TOWNSHIP – A major blow to Schuylkill County’s economy announced earlier this week may be averted as Big Lots has found a buyer.
The company filed a WARN notice this week, planning to lay off 505 workers at the Tremont Township distribution center.
That notice came after the Ohio-based retailer announced plans to shutter all stores after a sale of the company fell through. The company filed for bankruptcy earlier this year.
Friday, Big Lots announced another sale, to Variety Wholesalers through Gordon Brothers Retail Services.
Variety plans to buy between 200-400 Big Lots stores which will remain Big Lots stores.
They will also acquire two distribution centers.
The press release issued by Big Lots did not say which stores or distribution centers, but sources close to the Sentinel say the centers in Tremont Township and in Montgomery, Alabama will be kept.
The fate of the Frackville and Hazleton retail locations is unclear.
A bankruptcy court still needs to approve the deal.
Big Lots is Schuylkill County’s 15th largest employer.
