Christmas carols bring Park Place community together

PARK PLACE – A crowd of about 40 area residents gathered around a lit evergreen tree in the Mahanoy Township village of Park Place Sunday evening to sing Christmas carols, spread Christmas cheer, and bring the small patch town together.
The event was held on the property of Kathleen Wufsus, who led the caroling with a guitar accompaniment.
Bob Schrepple, lay pastor at the United Methodist Church in Gilberton and Mahanoy City, helped organize the event and provided religious background to songs and Christmas beliefs between songs.
“This was something that the patch had done, and Kathy and I had been talking about this for a long time, and two weeks ago, on a Saturday morning, we decided it was something that needed to be done again, said Schrepple regarding the origins of the event.
“I’m so glad we’re able to share this, and enjoy the reason for the season,” said Wufsus. “I’m very touched.”
The event took a traditional route, according to Schrepple, with traditional carols and a conclusion with a prayer, after the group interlocked arms for the singing of “Silent Night.”
Following the carols, attendees were invited to enjoy hot chocolate and socialize at a pavilion on the property.
Also joining in the festivities: Santa Claus!
This year was the first the event was formally organized in the village, drawing attendees from around the Mahanoy Township and Delano Township area.
