Chief deputy announces candidacy for sheriff
POTTSVILLE – The Sheriff’s Department’s chief deputy has announced his candidacy to lead the department.
Shawn Butler is seeking the Republican nomination for Schuylkill County Sheriff in the May primary election.
“I’m thrilled to announce my candidacy for Schuylkill County Sheriff,” Butler said. “It has been an honor and privilege to serve the residents of Schuylkill County alongside an amazing team for the past decade. I am committed to continuing this service with dedication, integrity, and transparency.”
A 1998 graduate of Cardinal Brennan High School, Butler is a lifelong Schuylkill County resident and has more than two decades of law enforcement experience.
He served in the U.S. Army Reserve until 2002 and began his law enforcement career in 2005 with Butler Township, where he later became a Lieutenant.
Butler has been with the Sheriff’s Department since 2014 when he became the department’s first armed security guard.
He was named chief deputy in 2023.
Butler said, if elected, he aims to enhance courthouse technology and security, promote community engagement programs for seniors and youth, and address the opioid epidemic by reintroducing drug prevention programs in schools.
He also said he plans to provide better education for seniors on scams and abuse.
Outside of law enforcement, Butler has been an active member of the community and is a volunteer firefighter with the Rangers Hose Co. in Girardville. He was also an EMT and Assistance Chief with Girardville Ambulance and has served as a T-Ball and Little League coach in Girardville and Frackville
Butler attends St. Joseph the Worker Parish in Frackville and serves on the board for Schuylkill Community Action and the Schuylkill Elder Abuse Prevention Alliance. He is also a member of the Pennsylvania Sheriff’s Association, the Knights of Columbus – Father Sheridan Council, NRA, Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association, Frackville Elks, and Fraternal Order of Police — North Schuylkill Lodge, where he was named Officer of the Year in 2023.
Butler lives in Frackville with his wife and five children.
