Car strikes temporary light at Gold Star Plaza; driver in custody
TURKEY RUN – A man is in police custody under suspicion of driving under the influence after his sedan struck the temporary traffic light trailer in this section of town early Thursday morning.
The crash happened just after 2:30am, when borough police said a Toyota Camry was headed southbound on the Gold Star Highway, Route 924.
The Camry struck the temporary traffic light trailer at the Gold Star Plaza entrance, before apparently rolling, coming to a final rest on its wheels in the right turn lane exiting the plaza. The traffic light trailer rolled on its side.
The temporary traffic light had been in place since a tri-axle downed the original light post on July 28.
Debris, including the entire right front wheel assembly from the Camry, covered the roadway at the scene.
Shenandoah Police at the scene said they took the driver into custody under suspicion of driving under the influence, though they declined to release his name.
The traffic light trailer was pulled out of the southbound travel lane of the Gold Star Highway by Steve’s Towing, who also towed the Camry from the scene.
Shenandoah Fire officials contacted the company that owns the traffic light trailer, who will send a crew to the borough in the morning. Until then, the right turn lane exiting Gold Star Plaza will be closed.
The driver of the Camry was evaluated at the scene by Shenandoah Ambulance.
Responding to the scene along with Shenandoah Police were the Columbia Hose and Rescue Hook and Ladder fire companies, as well as Shenandoah Ambulance.
