Businesses, organizations react, adjust to prevent coronavirus spread

SHENANDOAH – Some local businesses are adjusting to do their part to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, and some organizations have adjusted their schedule as well.

A landmark downtown Shenandoah business, Kowalonek’s on South Main Street, is asking customers to take a number and wait outside or in their car until their number is called.

“We are doing our best to stay proactive in the fight against Coronavirus disease,” Kowalonek’s said in a notice.

Additionally, Kowalonek’s will not allow the public to use their restroom.

In Ashland, Ashland Little League announced that their activities would be suspended until April 6, citing guidelines set forth by Little League International.

“Above all else, our priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of our players, volunteers, and spectators, as well as our neighbors and loved ones in our community,” the league wrote in a release.

“These are unprecedented times,” they continued. “In the interim, our league’s board will reconvene in the coming days to begin making plans for an alternate opening day.”

The league will not host any practices, meetings, or other functions through their league until April 6.

The Lavelle Church of the Nazarene in Butler Township is implementing guidelines suggested to them by the Philadelphia District, including a no handshake policy, serving packaged communion, among others.

At the Fairlane Village Mall in East Norwegian Township, manager Lexington Realty International posted a flyer on their entrance notifying customers of their prevention activities.

“We want you to know that our mall is working with local, state, and national health agencies on prevention and management in the event of an outbreak in our community,” Rocco Arruzzo, regional manage,r wrote in the message to customers.

Wells Fargo Bank posted similar flyers on their door Thursday, notifying customers they “are continuing to monitor the situation closely” and they “continue to follow all public health guidelines.”

Suggestions to help prevent the spread of the disease include staying home if you’re not feeling well, washing hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, avoid touching eyes, nose, and moth with unwashed hands, avoiding close contact with people who are sick, and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue if you cough and sneeze.
