Brush fire burns portion of former Sandy Beach property
SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – A swath of what used to be the upper reservoir at the former Sandy Beach Recreation Area burned Tuesday evening.
Firefighters were called to the former popular swimming spot and reservoir for a reported brush fire just after 6pm.
Flames and smoke could be seen from Route 924 above, and the Schuylkill County Communications Center received multiple calls to report the fire.
Heights Fire Co. firefighters responded with their brush truck and made their way back to the breached dams and tackled the blaze within about 40 minutes.
No injuries were reported, and no structures were damaged.
The Sandy Beach Recreation Area was operated by Shenandoah Borough until the 1990s, and the dams were breached by order of PADEP in the early 2000s.
