Duplex destroyed by fire in Girardville
GIRARDVILLE – A double-block home here was destroyed by fire Saturday morning.
Firefighters were called to the unit block of East Mahanoy Avenue around 6am for a reported fire, and crews arrived to find heavy fire coming from a duplex at 28-30 East Mahanoy.
A second alarm was struck, bringing crews from Shenandoah, Mahanoy City, Englewood, Mount Carmel, William Penn, Pottsville, and more to the scene to assist Girardville and Ashland.
Heavy fire could be seen consuming the roof of the duplex at one point, and firefighters battled the blaze from the exterior due to structural concerns.
No injuries were reported and firefighters remained on scene until around 9:30am.
The home at 28 East Mahanoy had been abandoned for years and early reports indicated 30 East Mahanoy was vacant as well.
According to the Schuylkill County Parcel Locator, 28 is owned by A&W Home Rentals, of Ashland, and has been since 2016, while 30 is owned by Trendsetters Investments, LLC, of Shenandoah, and it was just purchased on Feb. 16.
Route 54 through town was closed during the firefight.
