Borough to reinstate large item trash hauling
SHENANDOAH – If you’ve got a couch or a bed to get rid of in Shenandoah, the borough will take it for a small fee.
Borough Council President Joe Boris announced the effort at Monday night’s council meeting.
The cost is $15 for the first item and $10 for each additional item, and items will be collected on the first and third Friday of the month.
Residents, upon payment, will be given a tag for their items.
“It will be first-come first-serve,” Boris said, based on the borough’s capacity to haul.
Furniture, carpeting, mattresses, and such are eligible.
Demolition and construction material, tires, yard waste, air conditions, large appliances, and air conditioners are not eligible.
Household garbage also is not eligible, as it is supposed to be taken during regular garbage collection.
Boris said the effort is another step in combating dumping in the area, which he said is exacerbated by costs at regional transfer stations and landfills.
“Whether you bring a bag, or a bottle in, you’re paying $88,” Boris said, noting the facilities charge a one ton minimum.
In other business, the borough discussed a resolution which would set a fee for private trash haulers to operate in the borough. That ordinance was tabled for further discussion.
