Borough police yank vehicles from west end street without warning
SHENANDOAH – A car owner came back to their car gone Tuesday afternoon after borough police towed two vehicles without warning.
Around 4pm Tuesday, a borough police car pulled up to the corner of West Lloyd and North Gilbert Street, approached two vehicles — a white Chevrolet and a maroon Subaru — parked on North Gilbert Street.
Patrolman Mindy Parker-Petrus wrote a ticket for each, placed them on the vehicles, and moments later, a tow truck arrives and the operator hooks up both vehicles and drives off.
For at least one of the vehicles, the ticket Parker-Petrus wrote was the first the vehicle had received.
Past practice for borough police would be to affix a tow tag to the window of the vehicle, warning the driver they have 48 hours or the vehicle will be towed.
Borough Council ratified an ordinance last month allowing police to take a vehicle immediately if it is stored for more than 72 hours in one place, without a valid inspection sticker, without a current registration plate, or with delinquent fines or penalties.
Common practice in municipalities with such an ordinance, though, is to attempt to notify the owner to rectify the situation and, if that fails, the vehicle is towed.
Borough Police made no such effort on Gilbert Street for either vehicle.
An illegally parked vehicle at the corner of Lloyd and Gilbert was also left alone.
