Borough man throws lamp at cops, injures two in scuffle
SHENANDOAH – A borough man is in county prison after police say he threw a lamp at them before kicking and biting officers who were taking him into custody.
The incident happened around 10:15am this morning in the 100 block of West Washington Street, when police were called for a disturbance.
Police arrived to find Randy Gelbutis, 50, of Shenandoah at North Jardin and West Washington. He was carrying a large lamp and yelling at officers.
Police directed Gelbutis to put the lamp down, which he did.
He then began to yell and charge at officers before grabbing and tossing the lamp at the two responding officers.
Police requested backup as Gelbutis fought, kicking and biting officers, inflicting minor injuries.
West Mahanoy Township, Ringtown, Frackville, Mahanoy City, and Mahanoy Township Police all responded to the scene to assist.
Gelbutis was subsequently taken into custody, charged with aggravated assault – two counts, simple assault – two counts, reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, public drunkenness, and disorderly conduct.
He was arraigned by Magisterial District Judge Anthony Kilker and committed to Schuylkill County Prison, unable to post $25,000 straight cash bail.
