Borough could do away with monthly street sweeping
SHENANDOAH – The days of the monthly car shuffle could be over in Shenandoah at some point soon, borough council indicated at Monday’s monthly meeting.
Council President Joe Boris said the matter would be explored further next year, but raised the idea of renting a street sweeper twice a year instead of owning and operating their own.
“The street sweeper is always broke,” Boris said. “I don’t know how much money we put into it, plus [borough employee’s time]. I think maybe we do what Mahanoy City does, get some prices, and see if we can outsource it.”
The borough’s street sweeper is currently out of service again. Borough Manager Tony Sajone said the part needed is being ordered.
“If that’s what we’re going to do, we need to make sure it’s properly signed,” Mayor Andrew Szczyglak said. “It has to be posted, it has to give people timely notice to get their cars off the streets, and if their cars aren’t, don’t just put a ticket on them — give them a ticket — but have their cars towed off the street.”
Szczyglak said the tow truck follows borough police in other communities and tows vehicles shortly after they are ticketed if they aren’t moved.
“You’ve got to make sure the streets are done, not this weaving in and out of cars because they’d rather pay the $25 ticket and leave the car there,” Szczyglak said.
“If we’re going to only do it three times a year, we have to make sure the streets are done,” he added.
Currently, the borough street sweeper runs monthly through the warm weather months, when it is in operation.
No action on the matter was taken at Monday’s meeting.
