Block party season returns with Englewood’s summer kickoff
ENGLEWOOD – After an extremely abridged block party season last year, northern Schuylkill’s fire companies and churches are gearing up for a return to normalcy this year.
The Friendship Fire Co. of Englewood is hosting their annual block party this weekend after a year’s hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.
The block party began Friday, despite dreary weather, and continued today, with much of the same, minus rainfall.
Several dozen emergency vehicles, joined by the North Schuylkill champion track team, and, in some parts of the route, impatient traffic, paraded through Frackville and the Altamont and Englewood sections of West Mahanoy and Butler Townships Saturday evening.
Trucks from as far as Sunbury, Elysburg, Briar Creek Township, and Walnutport joined local fire companies from Shenandoah, Frackville, Mahanoy City, Girardville, and Mount Carmel, among others, in the parade.
Back at the firehouse, three lines for food items, and a separate line for bleenies — potato pancakes in other areas — extended throughout the grounds as the event was well attended.
Toolshed Jack performed Saturday night for that crowd.
The event continues Sunday at noon, with the John Stevens Doubleshot Polka Band performing from 2pm-6pm.
Next weekend, the Columbia Hose Co. of Shenandoah will host their annual block party.
