Basement fire damages Mahanoy row home
MAHANOY CITY – A row home in Mahanoy City was damaged by fire early Tuesday morning.
Firefighters were called to the 600 block of East Centre Street for a reported house fire just after 4am.
Smoke was seen from the rear of a row of homes in that block and a second alarm was struck, bringing crews from Shenandoah, Girardville, Englewood, Barnesville, Frackville, Tamaqua, and Hometown to assist the Mahanoy City Fire Department.
Crews found a basement fire in 628 East Centre Street and made quick work of the blaze. Fire damage was contained to that home, according to Assistant Fire Chief Mike Matunis.
Firefighters were also seen in homes at 630 and 626 East Centre Street, and a ventilation fan was set up in 630 East Centre.
No injuries were reported and second alarm crews were clear of the scene by 5:30am.
The extent of any smoke damage in the adjoining residences was not known Tuesday morning, nor was a cause.
Assisting firefighters at the scene were Mahanoy City Police, Mahanoy City Fire Police, Hometown Fire Police, Shenandoah Ambulance, and Ashland’s Washington Hose Ambulance.
