AutoZone planned for Shenandoah’s Turkey Run section
SHENANDOAH – A new auto parts store in the Turkey Run section received conditional approval from Shenandoah planners Thursday.
The Planning Commission met at borough hall to vote on the proposed project on the Gold Star Highway on the property of the former 924 Farmers Market.
Carmen DiDiano, general manager for MDM Surveyors and Engineers from the Pittsburgh area, said AutoZone will purchase a portion of that property from the Shustacks, closer to the highway and the Shenandoah Family Development.
The new 7,400 square foot store will be corporate-owned and operated, and they hope to break ground in the fall.
DiDiano said the store is one of several that will fill in areas they had not previously served. While AutoZone has a warehouse near Hazleton, the nearest stores previously were in Tamaqua, Schuylkill Haven, Hazleton, Berwick, and Coal Township.
He said the company plans to build 300 stores in the next year internationally.
The store is two lots removed from Shenandoah’s Advanced Auto Parts location, and DiDiano said competition is good for the market.
The typical store, he says, employs about 12-15 people.
“We’re looking forward to coming into Shenandoah,” DiDiano said.
When construction begins, he said it would take about three months to complete.
The fence between the store and the Shenandoah Family Development will be replaced, he said, and the farmers market building will remain.
The plan is still contingent on certain approvals from Shenandoah’s borough engineer, borough council, and PennDOT.
This project is one of the first new-construction commercial projects in Shenandoah since the construction of the Family Dollar location on West Centre Street.
