Ashland firefighters tackle SUV fire at park; driver flees

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Firefighters douse hotspots in the engine compartment of a Ford Escape.

ASHLAND – An SUV burned in the woodlands at Willow Park here, and firefighters said the driver was nowhere to be found.

Fire crews were called to the park at 15th and Pine Streets around 5:30pm for reports of a vehicle fire.

Firefighters from Ashland’s two fire companies arrived to find a Ford Escape in the woods aflame.

Fire Chief Phillip Groody said no one was hurt in the incident, and that the driver was not present at the scene when they arrived.

Ashland Police were on scene investigating as well.

The fire was brought under control in short order, and crews were clear of the scene within about half an hour.
