MAHANOY CITY – State Senator David G. Argall (R-29/Rush Township)’s office announced yesterday school safety grants were awarded to our area schools, and today, each school shared their plans for the grants with the Sentinel.
The grants, Argall’s office said in a release, are given to assist schools in the continuing effort to “prevent violent incidents.”
Mahanoy Area’s grant writer, Tracy Dudash, told the Sentinel via email the $30,000 grant will be used to purchase security cameras for in and around the school, as well as various items to be used in the event of an intruder or lockdown, like tourniquets, door barricades, and magnetic window covers.
Additionally, the funding will be used for training for the district’s School Resource Officers, Dudash added.
For North Schuylkill, which received $35,000, Superintendent Bob Ackell said, “North Schuylkill will use the grant money to upgrade physical security including additional security cameras.”
Shenandoah Valley Superintendent Brian Waite, regarding his school’s $30,000 grant, said “We are using the funds to target school safety initiatives in the district.”
