Aqua, Pennsylvania American Water parent companies announce merger

BRYN MAWR – Two private water giants with territory in our area have announced their intent to merge.

Essential Utilities, parent company of Aqua Pennsylvania, and American Water, parent company of Pennsylvania American Water, will serve 4.7 Million water and wastewater customers in 17 states if the merger clears regulatory hurdles. The combined company will retain the American Water name and Camden, N.J. headquarters.

Aqua purchased the Municipal Authority of the Borough of Shenandoah (MABS), taking possession of the system in 2023. The company also serves Girardville, Mount Carmel, and the surrounding areas through their Roaring Creek division.

Pennsylvania American Water serves Frackville and the surrounding area.

Each company’s board of directors unanimously approved an agreement for an all-stock merger, according to a press release.

“Throughout Essential’s nearly 140-year history, we have consistently led with purpose to shape a future rooted in sustainability, innovation, resilience and best-in-class service for our customers,” Essential Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Christopher H. Franklin said. “We are confident that the combined company will build upon our longstanding track record of delivering safe and reliable services and be better positioned to solve today’s challenges while creating a sustainable future.”

“This combination brings together two industry leaders united by our shared mission to provide safe, clean, reliable and affordable water and wastewater services to our customers,” American Water President and Chief Executive Officer John C. Griffith said. “By joining forces with Essential, the combined company’s enhanced scale and operational efficiency will support continued investment in our critical infrastructure, enabling us to continue providing superior customer service at affordable rates.”
