SHENANDOAH – Law enforcement are at the Shenandoah Valley High School today, and Elementary Road is blocked off after an apparent threat at the school district.

Details are few, but borough police at the school told the Sentinel a canine unit was en route to sweep the buildings out of an abundance of caution.

The specifics of the threat are not yet known — borough police referred to the school district, who we have reached out to — but multiple county school districts received “unsubstantiated threats via text message,” according to the Mahanoy Area School District.

In a letter to the community, Superintendent Joie Green said her district and multiple others received such threats.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – A utility truck blocks the Centre Street entrance to Elementary Road.

“Therefore, out of an abundance of caution and safety for our students and staff, we are dismissing early today,” Green said. “As always, our main priority is the safety and welfare of our students and staff.”

As of midday, utility trucks and gates blocked Elementary Road, the access road into the heart of the Shenandoah Valley campus. Stadium Road and West Centre Streets remain open to traffic.

Borough Police, West Mahanoy Township Police, and State Police are all at the school as of midday.
