Annual Centralia Cleanup fills 20 cubic yard dumpster

CENTRALIA, Columbia County – Volunteers took to the streets and woodlands of Centralia and Conyngham Township Saturday for an annual cleanup, hosted by the Eastern Pennsylvania Coalition on Abandoned Mine Reclamation.
This year’s clean-up drew about half as many volunteers as in years past, though the group of about 45 tackled the job in about two-and-a-half hours, Bobby Hughes, EPCAMR executive director said.
A 20 cubic yard dumpster, holding about three tons of trash, was filled by the time volunteers wrapped up, Hughes said. Also removed were 42 tires and two CRT televisions.

In contrast, over 50 cubic yards of trash, 300 tires, and a dozen TVs were collected last year.
“We couldn’t have asked for a better turnout and the amount of enthusiasm from everyone to chip in and lend a hand,” Hughes said. “This show of support and gathering of like-minded people is what communities are all about.”
