All area schools back in session with Hazleton return

HAZLETON – As of Tuesday morning, all of our local school districts are back in session as the Hazleton Area School District welcomed more than 14,000 students.

The district historically has been the last in the Sentinel area to return to school, with the first day of school typically falling after Labor Day.

“As we celebrate our successes and look to the future, we remain focused on providing every student with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive,” said Hazleton Area Superintendent Dr. Brian T. Uplinger. “We are proud of the resilience, dedication, and accomplishments of our students, families, and staff. Together, we will continue building a brighter future for the Hazleton Area School District.”

Hazleton’s enrollment is an increase of 3% from last year, the district said, spread across 16 schools.

Shenandoah Valley, Mahanoy Area, and North Schuylkill all returned last Monday, August 25. Mount Carmel was the first to return. Their first day for students was Thursday, August 21.

SV welcomed back 1,261 students this school year, with 697 on the elementary side (Pre-K through 6th Grade) and 564 on the high school side (7th Grade through 12th Grade).
