‘A-Hole’ investigation still active; mayor thanks volunteers, responders
GIRARDVILLE – Girardville’s mayor expressed gratitude for those involved in the multi-week effort to locate a missing man in an abandoned strip mine at Wednesday’s borough council meeting.
“The public should be aware that it’s still an ongoing investigation through [Pennsylvania State Police] even though the search has been discontinued,” Mayor Michael Zangari said. “I think it’s very important that we thank everyone that helped us. We had teams from throughout the state and 90% of them were volunteers.”
He expressed thanks to all of the first responders who assisted as well as residents of town who donated water and refreshments.
The multi-week effort began in May as crews tried to locate a man missing in the “A-Hole,” one of two infamous water-filled mine pits in the Girardville area.
Several marine units, as well as dive teams from Lackawanna, Lancaster, and Lebanon counties assisted along with the Fish and Boat Commission and the State Police Marine Unit.
The search was called off after several weeks.
Zangari emphasized that anyone with information on the incident should call the State Police at Frackville at 570-874-5300.
In other business, borough council said the 100 and 200 blocks of Preston Avenue are being repaved. Council discussed the possibility of repaving the center of 2nd Avenue from Mahanoy to Main.
The cost would be $23,000 but council worried a planned water line project would render the work redundant. The matter was tabled until they could find out a timetable for that project.
Council also approved a request from the Girard Hose Co. to hold their block party on August 16 and 17, as well as for the Girardville Fire Police to host a tag day.
Council also discussed repairs to a borough streets department truck as well as various park improvements.
