89-year-old man injured in crash near Hometown

HOMETOWN – An 89-year-old man was taken to the hospital after a single vehicle crash this morning near Hometown.
According to State Police at Frackville, the crash occurred around 7:25am at 83 Claremont Avenue, when a 2013 Ford Fiesta was travelling southbound on PA Route 309.
For an unknown reason, the vehicle, operated by Robert Jewells, 89, of Tamaqua, lost control on the slush covered roadway while negotiating a left curve.
The Fiesta left the roadway and struck a concrete planter and the base of a business’s sign 20 feet west of the roadway.
The vehicle came to a stop 10 feet farther, facing southwest.
Jewells suffered injuries to an unknown severity, troopers said, and was transported via Tamaqua Ambulance to St. Luke’s Hospital in Coaldale.
Assisting PSP at the scene were the Hometown Fire Company and Tamaqua EMS.
