NUREMBERG – The 20th edition of the Nuremberg Celebration got underway today, and in the process, several parts of the venue, the North Union Township Park, were dedicated in memory of area residents.

At 5:00pm Saturday, a ceremony was held dedicating park tables, swings, and lanterns to Donald Michael, Wendy Day, and Gary Croll respectively.

Pastor Suzanne Schaeffer, from the Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Nuremberg, spoke about the dedications during the ceremony.

“We will be dedicating three things: the pink swings, the lanterns, and rededicating the tables under the pavilion,” Schaeffer said leading into a prayer. “We gather here asking the special favor of Jesus Christ as we dedicate and rededicate these swings, the lanterns, and the tables in memory of those who have gone before us. We recommit ourselves in their memory to this community that they loved.”

“Our path will be lighted by these lanterns in memory of Gary Croll, who helped found the celebration we now enjoy, who was dedicated to his community and family, and was instrumental in the construction of the pavilion, the stage, and pretty much everything in between,” Schaeffer said. “We will enjoy food and rest on the rededicated tables in memory of Donald Michael who worked dilligently for this community and park, and whose wife continues the legacy today.”

“We will enjoy the swings in memory of Wendy Jastremsky Day and remember her generosity, her spirit, and her love of life, nature, and others. May we hear her voice in the wind as we swing, reminding us to enjoy these pleasures and places as life has to give,” said Schaeffer.

A butterfly release was then held in memory of those who’ve passed away.

Following the memorial dedications, the committee presented a plaque to the family of Gary Croll in recognition of his service, and also to Allen Mummey, the committee’s distinguished citizen award.

The master of ceremonies for the event, during the plaque presentation, asked the 92-year-old Mummey, “Is there anything you would like to say?”

“No, not really,” said Mummey, as he sat surrounded by event attendees.

This year’s event features a wide variety of activities and food vendors, including Nuremberg-area churches and community organizations. Craft vendors are also present, as is live entertainment. A basket auction featuring 86 baskets is also being held at the celebration.

On Sunday, from 11am to 3pm will be a car show, a volleyball tournament at noon, a reptile show at 1:30pm and 5:15pm, and fireworks at 10:00pm, among other events. A full list is on the celebration’s Facebook page
