Shen. Street Hockey reunites to help one of its own fight cancer

SHENANDOAH – The macadam playground at the north end of downtown Shenandoah, vacant, quiet, and locked up the entire summer, came alive Saturday afternoon for a benefit to help an area resident who has cancer.
The site, a street hockey court, once hosted a league, from the 70s until the mid 90s, and today, members of that league reunited to help one of their own, Brian Rooney.
Rooney, Shenandoah, is battling brain cancer.
Roughly fifty former street hockey players and others who were interested in playing and helping the cause brought their sticks and faced off within the rusted fences.
At a tent where members of the four teams gathered and received their team shirts, jerseys from the former league were displayed, including Schutawie’s, Pizza Shop, and Billy’s Beverage.
Steve “Junior” Karvois dedicated the games to all who are battling or have passed away from cancer, “and all our friends that played over the years who have passed away or cannot make it because of their health.”
Prior to the games, Sasha Sherry, an All-American and Team USA hockey player, helped area children with free hockey lessons.
