Brush fire burns shrubs, bench in downtown Mt. Carmel
MOUNT CARMEL, Northumberland County – A brush fire burned several shrubs, a bench, and damaged a light post Sunday afternoon in this Northumberland County borough.
Firefighters were called to the scene on North Oak Street between the Sons of Poland and the UNB Bank around 3:30pm for the brush fire.
Arriving firefighters found smoke billowing above the building.
Crews from every Mount Carmel fire company responded to the scene, closing a portion of Oak Street.
The fire was contained within about half an hour, with crews remaining on the scene until about 4:30pm
Borough fire chief James Reed told the Sentinel at the scene that he reviewed security camera footage from the bank up to about 20 minutes prior to dispatch, and no evident cause was seen.
The building was not damaged in the blaze, Reed said.
