GILBERTON – For the first time since June 10, the main section of Gilberton borough is largely free of floodwaters.

What water remains is in a pond at the far west end of Railroad Street and in a drainage ditch that runs alongside Railroad Street.

Though floodwaters had drained completely from the streets, and pumping continues from the pond, borough officials said water levels continue to rise in the pond itself, as water seeps in from beneath the Reading and Northern railroad and from the area of the construction site.

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL – Pumps remain in operation to remove the remaining water from a pond collecting floodwaters in Gilberton on June 17, 2020.

Main Street and Gold Star Highway offramp into the impacted village remain closed and will remain so until the emergency declaration is lifted, Frackville Police Chief Rick Bell said.

The road will likely remain closed for the next few days to give borough officials and homeowners the time and space to assess damage and such
