Hazleton woman charged for dumping deceased pit bull in Hazle Twp.

HAZLE TWP., Luzerne County – A Hazleton woman is facing littering and animal abandonment charges after a dead pit bull was dumped just over Hazleton city limits Wednesday.

Troopers from the Hazleton barracks were called to the area of Hayes and East 13th Streets in the township around 1:30pm, when a light brown American Pit Bull Terrier was found wrapped in two garbage bags, a blanket, and a flattened air mattress.

The dog, troopers said, appeared to have suffered blunt force trauma to the head, and was dumped between 8:00pm and 8:30pm on Tuesday

State Police filed charges against 35-year-old Nakeya Smiley, of Hazleton city, who they say struck the dog with a car Tuesday.

Troopers said Smiley confessed to abandoning the dog and household items, and that the dog was hers. She told troopers her reasoning was that she “did not know what to do with the dog.”

Charges of Abandonment of Animals by Owner and Scattering Rubbish were filed against Smiley.
