West Mahanoy discusses coronavirus; office closed to public
SHENANDOAH HEIGHTS – West Mahanoy Township’s Emergency Management Coordinator briefed township supervisors on the coronavirus outbreak Tuesday evening.
Rick Examitas, township Emergency Management Coordinator, explained the county’s recommended efforts to mitigate the hazard.
“The county level is taking the necessary steps that they need to take in making notifications,” said Examitas. “A lot of it is common sense, but we’re following what is recommended by the government and the governor.”
Examitas explained that no cases were reported in Schuylkill, Northumberland, or Carbon Counties as of noon Tuesday.
He added that Shenandoah Community Ambulance, where he serves as president, is continuing to serve their response area, which includes West Mahanoy, as usual.
“We’re taking care of everybody we always did,” Examitas said. “We just hope this can last for the two weeks they’re talking for and we hope for the best.”
“Please utilize caution. Be sanitary, be cautious of groups, crowds, etc.,” Examitas added. “It’s everything that they’re preaching over television, etc.”
Examitas said the situation continues to evolve rapidly.
The township unanimously approved closing the township office to the public and giving the chair authority to authorize payment of bills, should April’s meeting be cancelled.
“If there are going to be any payments made, we ask that they be mailed to the office or be dropped in the mail box,” said chairwoman Lauren Amato. “We are not going to take cash payments at this time, so it will have to be a check or a money order. Credit cards can be called in.”
