SAN DIEGO – A Kulpmont native is serving out west in the U.S. Navy.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Kassandra Hertzog, of Kulpmont, serves the U.S. Navy at Assault Craft Unit One (ACU 1) operating out of San Diego, California.

“Where I’m from, I learned to have a strong work ethic and to never settle for anything less than what I deserve,” Hertzog said.

Hertzog joined the Navy six years ago. Today, Hertzog serves as an engineman.

“My father, David Hertzog, previously served in the Marines for three years, and he was an influence on me joining the service, so it felt like it was the right path for me,” Hertzog said. “Serving in the Navy makes my family proud, and it means having a greater purpose than myself. It’s setting myself up for a career after the Navy, as I’m planning on furthering my education to get a degree in mechanical engineering.”

ACU 1 is comprised of more than 300 sailors who are responsible for 32 landing crafts. Landing craft are used to deliver vehicles, personnel and cargo from the sea to the shore. They are also used to support civilian humanitarian operations.

“I would like to thank my father and my grandmother for constantly pushing me and guiding me through the tough times and helping me decide to join the Navy,” Hertzog added.
