Northumberland votes to study partnership with Schuylkill Comm Center

SUNBURY – Northumberland County Commissioners voted Tuesday to explore a partnership with the Schuylkill County Communications Center for their 911 center.
Commissioners Chairman Sam Schiccatano said they began a study last week with the East Central Emergency Network, the communications center for Columbia and Montour counties, and are beginning one with Schuylkill.
Commissioners voted Tuesday to approve a memorandum of understanding with Schuylkill County “for the shared operation and management of a Public Safety Answering Point to enhance emergency response services for both counties.”
“This study will take months and then they’ll come back and the three of us will sit down and look and see where can we have as good or better and where we can save money,” Schiccatano said referring to the Schuylkill study.
The moves come as Northumberland County deals with a budget crunch and a tax increase.
“We are looking very deep into what we can do [to contain costs,]” Schiccatano said.
“There’s no decisions made,” Schiccatano added, rebutting rumors. “Nobody’s going anywhere. We are Northumberland County 911 Center in the same building doing the same stuff that we’ve always been doing and it won’t change until we announce it and that’s months, maybe years from now.”
