Mahanoy youth wrestlers win league title

MAHANOY CITY – Mahanoy Area’s elementary wrestlers won the Coal Cracker League championship this weekend.

The team consists of elementary schoolers from Mahanoy Area and Shenandoah Valley and the Coal Cracker League is comprised of 11 other teams from Schuylkill, Monroe, and Northumberland counties.

The team defeated Tamaqua in the opening round, avenged a regular season loss to Mount Carmel and faced Jim Thorpe in another regular season rematch in the title game.

The Bears took down Jim Thorpe 47-44 to win the title.

Coached by John Cambra III, Matt Sullivan, Joe Yutko, Kyle Kerlavage, Eric Brassington, and Ronnie Malafarina, the team celebrated with a fire truck parade through Mahanoy City Sunday with fire apparatus from Mahanoy City, Delano, Ryan Township, and Shenandoah.

Team Members include Ryan Mertz, Liam Sullivan, Parker Brode, Jericho Caporusso, David Cushner, Evan Yutko, Casey Symons, Landon Wagner, Keegan Sullivan, Aiden Mertz, Josiah Erickson, John Cambra IV, Vinny Malafarina, Owen Yutko, Daxton Finneran, Brandon Loughlin, Max Holman, Oliver Kerlavage, Kiara Caporusso, Blake Brassington, Hunter Dabashinsky, Gorby Weeks, Asharia Weeks, Axel Hernandez, Thiere Kershetsky and Josh Stevens.
