Cybersecurity incident brings Pa. American Water customer portal offline; company pauses billing

FRACKVILLE – The parent of the water company that services the Frackville area has paused billing and taken its customer portal offline after what they called a cybersecurity incident.

American Water, parent to Pennsylvania American Water, said they “learned of unauthorized activity in our computer networks and systems” Thursday.

That activity was a cybersecurity incident, they said, and in “an effort to protect our customers’ data and to prevent any further harm to our environment, we disconnected or deactivated certain systems.”

The customer portal, MyWater, was taken offline proactively and billing is paused until further notice, they said.

“We currently believe that none of its water or wastewater facilities or operations have been negatively impacted by this incident,” the company said in a release, adding that water remains safe to drink.

Late fees are not being charged while the customer portal is down and they said that an investigation is ongoing into the matter and could not comment on whether or not customer information was at risk.
