Council approves advertising new tow ordinance
SHENANDOAH – Borough council approved advertising a replacement for the controversial towing ordinance at September’s regular meeting.
Solicitor Shane Hobbs said the ordinance would create a month-to-month rotation instead of a call-by-call rotation, which, though it was codified in the prior ordinance, was never implemented.
“Some of the language is similar to the one prior,” Hobbs said. “The main gist of it is to get a rotation system in place that’s feasible for the borough and understandable and financially feasible, too.”
The ordinance requires towing services selected by the borough must be located within the borough, and requires an application be provided to the borough and signed off on by the borough police chief.
Council President Joe Boris said that the new ordinance eliminates the fee structure from the prior ordinance, which he believed were low.
Dwight Williams, owner of Talk of Town, LLC and a proponent for the towing rotation, raised a concern that an unusually snowy month in January, for example, could lead to more calls for one company versus another.
He also commended the removal of a fee cap.
The ordinance still must be approved at the October council meeting.
