Councilman, ex-President, resigns from Shenandoah council

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - Leo Pietkiewicz in March, 2020.

SHENANDOAH – Shenandoah Borough Council now has an open seat after a longtime councilman and former council president resigned Monday.

Leo Pietkiewicz, who was not present Monday, submitted a letter of resignation effective immediately, citing personal reasons.

Katie Catizone, current council president, read his letter aloud.

“I would like to personally thank all of you present, and past, that work together for the betterment of the borough of Shenandoah,” Pietkiewicz wrote. “It is not easy sitting in the position you currently sit and choose to get involved in the community and put up with the nonsense of the peanut gallery whose only intentions are to give Shenandoah a black eye and bring the community down.”

“It has been a pleasure to serve for the past 20 years. I am proud of what has been accomplished and have no regrets on decisions and votes I have rendered,” Pietkiewicz added. “I was entrusted by the residents of Shenandoah through their votes at election time and have always had the borough’s best interest in mind for the betterment of the community. But, for some, it wasn’t good enough or didn’t meet their expectations, their demands, or their point of view.”

“There is still a long way to go and many hills to climb, but as you know, you can’t wave a magic wand and fix the many problems that the borough faces,” Pietkiewicz continued. “There are processes that must be followed and which regulate what the borough can and cannot do pertaining to the issues it faces.”

Pietkiewicz’s term has two years remaining and will be filled at a later meeting.

Council is seeking letters from those interested in filling the term.
