Safety concerns around abandoned building shorten Heritage Day parade route

KAYLEE LINDENMUTH / SHENANDOAH SENTINEL - The former M&T Quart Store is in a state of collapse, seen here on May 16, 2023, forcing a change in the parade route for Heritage Day.

SHENANDOAH – As participants practiced their routines for Saturday’s Heritage Day parade Tuesday, Downtown Shenandoah Inc. announced that the parade will be a few blocks shorter this year because of safety concerns.

The parade would typically begin on North Jardin Street and proceed south to Cherry Street, turning east toward Main, and turning north on Main, making its way through downtown and through the festival on North Main Street.

Though, at the corner of Main and Cherry Streets along the normal parade route, the former M&T Quart Store has suffered a partial collapse and one of its walls is bowed towards Cherry Street.

Out of an abundance of caution, DSI has changed the parade route, using Oak Street to get to Main instead.

The collapsing building is listed as being owned by Glen Paterson and Edward Spielberger, both of whom are deceased.

Shenandoah Borough has had difficulty acquiring the property to demolish because it is on the Tax Claim Commissioners List.
