Council provides update on police complaints, says goal is to ‘work together as a team’
SHENANDOAH – Borough Council provided an update Monday regarding police complaints made last month and the committee meeting to resolve them.
Mayor Andrew Szczyglak said he met with the borough’s law and order committee and Chief George Carado earlier this month for over two hours.
The meeting came after complaints were made last month about how the police department responded to and handled calls.
Szczyglak described the meeting as “very informative.”
Councilman Joe Boris, chair of the law and order committee, said they received insight into how the department has been running and the challenges it has faced, and added that the committee plans to meet again next week.
Szczyglak said that the department will now institute a policy in which a responding officer will speak to the complainant on a call, the person being reported, and provide an update to the complainant.
“The officer is going to go back to the person and explain what’s going on and what’s going to be done so the person that made the complaint knows and just doesn’t think that the officer blew them off and left,” Szczyglak said.
Boris added that officers will provide business cards, as well, to identify themselves.
“George says we need help, and we want to give them the help, and we want to work together as a team,” Boris said.
Council President Katie Catizone commended the committee’s work in responding to the community’s complaints.
