Two seriously injured in southern Schuylkill crash
WEST BRUNSWICK TOWNSHIP – Two people were seriously injured when their sedan clipped another, sending them sliding into a pole, according to State Police.
State Police at Schuylkill Haven said the crash happened around 3:30pm Saturday on Route 61 at Paramount Boulevard near the new Rutter’s gas station in West Brunswick Township, near Orwigsburg.
Troopers said Shirley L. Smith, 63, of Pottsville, was headed south on Route 61 in the driving lane towards the Paramount Boulevard intersection in a 2002 Toyota Camry.
Smith merged into the passing lane as Jarred T. Remp, 32, of Schuylkill Haven, was following behind in that lane in a 2017 Volkswagen Jetta.
Troopers said Remp moved into the left turn only lane and attempted to pass Smith.
As Remp merged back into the passing lane, his Jetta clipped Smith’s Camry, sending Remp’s sedan into a slide on the damp highway.
The Volkswagen slid across the right lane and into a traffic light.
Remp had to be rescued from the vehicle by firefighters, while his passenger, an 8-year-old girl, was rescued by a good samaritan, troopers said.
Both Remp and the child suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries, and were transported to local hospitals — Remp to Reading Hospital and the girl to Hershey.
Smith was not injured.
The southbound lanes of Route 61 were closed while the State Police Forensic Services Unit and crash reconstruction unit investigated.
State Police were assisted by Schuylkill EMS, Deer Lake Fire, and Orwigsburg Fire and Fire Police.
