Newkirk man killed in camper fire

NEWKIRK – A man was found dead inside a burned recreational vehicle in this Schuylkill Township village Wednesday evening.

Firefighters from Schuylkill Township’s fire companies — Tuscarora and Mary D — along with Walker Township’s tanker were called around 7:30pm to a home at 599 Old Route 209 for a reported camper fire.

Fire crews arrived to find a recreational vehicle aflame in the backyard of the home.

The fire was brought under in short order, though firefighters found a man dead in the vehicle.

A spokesperson for the Schuylkill County Coroner’s Office told the Sentinel at the scene that the man, Michael Farber, 56, of Newkirk, was pronounced dead at 8:42pm.

A virtual autopsy will be conducted.

A State Police fire marshal was called to the scene to assist Schuylkill Township Police and arrived Wednesday evening. He said it is “too early” in the investigation to determine a cause or provide further details.

The fire marshal will return to the scene tomorrow to continue the investigation.
